DLSMHSI and Cotabato Regional and Medical Center (CRMC) Strengthen Ties Through Strategic Benchmarking

The activity, held at the Cancer Institute Auditorium, opened with welcome remarks from Dr. Ishmael R. Dimaren, Medical Center Chief II, who highlighted the importance of collaboration among healthcare institutions in advancing service excellence.

The DLSMHSI delegation was led by Dr. Antonio B. Ramos, President; Mr. Ferdinand L. Berba, Chancellor; and Dr. Conrado P. Crisostomo, Vice Chancellor for Hospital Operations, together with key administrators across hospital operations, facilities management, supply management, and strategic management.

CRMC presented its institutional profile, highlighting key milestones, services, and ongoing developments. This was followed by presentations from major units, including Engineering and Facilities Management, the Integrated Hospital Operations and Management Program (IHOMP), Nursing Services, and the Patient and Occupational Safety Unit (POSU), showcasing integrated systems and patient-centered approaches to care.

A guided hospital tour featured key facilities such as the Cancer Institute, Emergency Disaster Management Unit, Operating Room Complex, Intensive Care Unit, wards, and the Radiology Department.

The DLSMHSI delegation expressed strong appreciation for CRMC’s expansion initiatives, modern medical equipment, and exemplary hospital management. Notably, the hospital’s efficient electronic systems, including real-time tracking of patient referrals, ward census, and staff assignments, were recognized for significantly improving service delivery. Sundays of Service: How Linggo’skwela is Empowering the Next Generation

The Lingkod Lasalyano student volunteers continue their mission through Linggo’skwela, a Sunday school program that provides opportunities for volunteers to extend their service to the community, particularly to the children of outsourced employees of the institution. Grounded in the Lasallian core values of spirit of faith, zeal for service, and communion in mission, the initiative fosters a nurturing space where children can grow, learn, and build meaningful memories.

Linggo’skwela is composed of simple, yet meaningful activities and lessons rooted in the Word of God. This transformative experience helps form children in the Spirit of Faith, while allowing volunteers to deepen their own zeal for service, creating an environment where every child feels loved, seen, and supported.

The beauty of Linggo’skwela lies in its ability to provide children with a space to develop their abilities with guidance from the volunteers, while also providing student volunteers the opportunity to serve and accompany the next generation. Despite coming from diverse academic backgrounds, student volunteers are united by

a single mission: following the footsteps of St. John Baptist de La Salle to uplift the lives of others, especially children.

Many of the children have also begun reflecting on what they learn during the sessions—practicing prayer and learning how to be helpful to others. Ultimately, the program helps them build a stronger connection with God while creating a space where they can freely express themselves.

As of April 12, 2026, Linggo’skwela has officially welcomed its third batch of participants. Through collaborative activities, the children built meaningful relationships with fellow participants and the Lingkod Lasalyano student volunteers. The program also encourages acts of service that reflect the teachings and example of St. John Baptist de La Salle.

Linggo’skwela demonstrates that even the smallest acts of kindness can create a lasting impact and help build a compassionate community where everyone grows together.

As part of the Lasallian community, the Zeal for Service is deeply rooted in every Lasallian. This commitment to social action is vividly expressed through the Lingkod Lasalyano Volunteer Program, supervised by the Lasallian Formation and Ministry Department (LFMD). It provides a platform and opportunities for Lasallian students and employees to serve the local community and beyond.

Learning from the North: A Benchmarking Activity at St. Louis University

The benchmarking visit was attended by key administrators of DLSMHSI, including Assistant Professor Dan Clarence A. Diaz, Dean of the College of Medical Imaging and Therapy (CMIT); Dr. Cheyen E. Molon, Director for Academic Partnerships and External Relations; and Assistant Professor Alfred Benedict A. Bayan, Program Director of the Department of Nuclear Medicine Technology.

They were warmly received by the administrators of Saint Louis University, namely Dr. Ann P. Opina, Dean of the School of Nursing, Allied Health and Biological Sciences; Dr. Allan Jay Espiritu, Associate Dean of the same school; and Professor Dionisio Noel Valbuena, Head of the Radiologic Technology Department.

This initiative forms part of the College’s broader strategy to continuously enhance the quality of its academic programs, particularly the Bachelor of Science in Radiologic Technology. The benchmarking activity aimed to provide a platform for the meaningful exchange of knowledge and best practices between institutions. Specifically, the visit focused on gaining insights into SLU’s approaches in curriculum design, teaching and learning strategies, assessment methodologies, and licensure examination preparation.

In addition to learning from SLU’s established practices, the benchmarking activity also provided an opportunity for the College to present its Bachelor of Science in Nuclear Medicine Technology program. During the discussion, the CMIT administrators shared key aspects of the program, including its structure, goals, and anticipated impact, and explored potential areas for collaboration should SLU express interest in offering a similar program in the future.

Overall, the benchmarking activity at St. Louis University proved to be a valuable endeavor in reinforcing academic excellence, strengthening institutional linkages, and promoting innovation, particularly in the field of medical imaging and therapy. More importantly, these efforts contribute to the continuous advancement of healthcare education in the country, supporting the development of highly competent and globally competitive professionals who can respond to national and international healthcare needs.

DLSUMC Boosts Cancer Care with New Digital Mammography Unit and Oncology Care Center

The Digital Mammography Unit enhances DLSUMC’s diagnostic capabilities by providing advanced breast imaging technology to support early detection of breast cancer. Meanwhile, the DLSUMC Oncology Care Center expands the hospital’s cancer care services by providing a much bigger dedicated space for patients undergoing treatment and consultation. The Center officially began operations at its new location on the Ground Floor of the Medical Arts Center on March 2, 2026. It will be open from Mondays to Saturdays, 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM, ensuring accessible, compassionate service for patients and their families.

DLSMHSI Upholds Academic Quality through 505th AUN-QA Programme Assessment

With support from the Center for Educational Effectiveness and Accreditation (CEEA), DLSMHSI welcomed AUN-QA assessors: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ngo Van Thuyen, Dr. Pawitra Liamruk, Assoc. The opening ceremony on February 24 commenced with a warm welcome from DLSMHSI President Dr. Antonio B. Ramos, followed by Dr. Thuyen's opening remarks on behalf of the AUN-QA, and concluded with a symbolic exchange of plaques. The first day was packed with interviews with college leadership and a comprehensive campus tour to showcase the Institute’s advanced facilities.

On the second day, the assessors met with alumni and their employers. These sessions provided vital insights into how DLSMHSI graduates perform in the professional world and how the curriculum aligns with the evolving needs of the global healthcare industry.

The three-day visit concluded on February 26 with a closing ceremony where the AUN-QA team presented their preliminary findings and commendations. DMQCP Completes International Academic Immersion at Huachiew Chalermprakiet University

Day 1:

The Holy Mass celebrating the Feast of Saint Miguel Febres Cordero was held at the Two Hearts of Jesus and Mary Chapel. It was led by Most Rev. Reynaldo G. Evangelista, DD, Bishop of Imus, and concelebrated by Rev. Fr. Jansen Ronquillo, MS.

A key moment was the Enthronement and Rite of Reception of his relics, which was attended by Lasallian leaders. The school corporation, Hermano San Miguel Febres Cordero Medical Education Foundation Inc., is named in his honor.

DLSMHSI also conferred the Star of Gratitude award to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Imus, the Sisters of Saint Paul of Chartres, and the Missionaries of Our Lady of La Salette for their invaluable partnership and contributions to the Institution.

Day 2:

On the second day of the Lasallian Mission Week 2026, DLSMHSI expressed its deepest gratitude by honoring the loyalty, dedication, and invaluable contributions of its employees and doctors through the Annual Recognition, themed “Shining As One,” and the Green Zeal Awards.

Day 3:

Day three of Lasallian Mission Week 2026 vibrated with energy as the Institutional Student Council launched Nexalite: Echoing Heartbeats Across Cosmic Realms . The festivities began on February 11 with its first act, ‘Metronyx,’ featuring a vibrant Rocket Parade, the Lipsync Nexapallooza, and an electrifying dance competition. Beyond the main stage, the campus offered a diverse mix of activities, ranging from video games and movie screenings to academic support like NMAT reviews and essential wellness services, including free HIV testing.

Day 4:

Day 4 of Lasallian Mission Week 2026 blasted off as Nexalite: Echoing Heartbeats Across Cosmic Realms entered Act II, ‘Cloudmire.’ The highlight was the Mr. and Ms. DLSMHSI 2026 pageant, where Glenn Piad and Michaela De Chavez of the College of Medicine took home the crowns.

The night shone brighter with performances from Ace Banzuelo and a high-octane guest performance by Drag Race Philippines Season 3 winner, Maxie Andreison.

Beyond the stage, the Green Sentinels enjoyed video games, movie screenings, the Institutional Student Press Conference, and accessible mental health screening and counseling services throughout the day.

Day 5:

The three-day journey of Nexalite: Echoing Heartbeats Across Cosmic Realms reached its final orbit with Act III, ‘Ravexium,’ ignited by an intense Battle of the Bands and a special performance by Filipino rapper Al James. Beyond the high-energy celebration, the mission of service carried on through the Extemporaneous Speech contest, the Daloy Blood Donation Drive, and accessible mental health screening and counseling services, keeping Lasallian excellence and well-being at the forefront.

Day 6:

DLSMHSI concluded Lasallian Mission Week 2026 with the 3rd Grand Alumni Homecoming, themed “ When Your Heart Returns to Green and White.” It is an evening of reunion, gratitude, and pride as alumni came home to where their purpose began. The celebration’s highlight was the Recognition of Distinguished Alumni, honoring outstanding individuals for their excellence and service to the profession.

Celebrating 35 Years: College of Medicine Class of 1990 Homecoming

On December 29, 2025, the College of Medicine Class of 1990 returned to their alma mater to celebrate a landmark 35th anniversary. The visit was a nostalgic journey through the halls and campus where their medical careers began and an inspiring look at the institution’s future.

Alumni explored the new Learning Commons and the Neurodevelopmental Center, witnessing firsthand the evolution of healthcare education. The group visited the Museum of the Human Body and the new 600-seat Auditorium, marveling at the cutting-edge facilities now available to current students. A visit to the College of Medicine Building and the Dr. Romeo P. Ariniego Library, served as a testament to the ascending legacy in healthcare, which is a far cry from the campus the alumni knew in 1990.

The day concluded with a focus on alumni engagement, discussing new opportunities for mentorship and scholarships. Though the campus has physically transformed since 1990, the bond of the "Animo" spirit remains as strong as ever.

The week started with a Thanksgiving Mass and blessing of the advanced research laboratories, followed by the official launch of the Research Exhibit alongside The Lasallian Journal of Health .

A diverse lineup of activities was held to sharpen technical skills and showcase scientific breakthroughs across all levels of academia. DLSMHSI's Karilag Tree Lighting Ignites the Holiday Season

The most wonderful time of the year officially arrived at De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute (DLSMHSI) on December 1, 2025, for the Karilag Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony. This year's event is organized by Lasallian Mission and Development (LMD) in coordination with the Academic Services-Student Life Engagement (AS-SLE) and the Institutional Student Council (ISC), which brought the whole Lasallian community together.

The event is named after the Tagalog word Karilag (or Karilagan), which translates to magnificence, splendor, or beauty. By naming the ceremony Karilag, the DLSMHSI community sets the stage for a truly exceptional and high-spirited celebration.

Despite the unexpected shower, the festive energy was palpable as the Green Sentinels enjoyed dazzling performances that served as a joyful countdown.

DLSMHSI Strengthens Workplace Safety with Mandatory Occupational Safety and Health Seminar

The De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute (DLSMHSI), through its Environmental, Safety, and Occupational Health (ESOH) Department, successfully conducted a mandatory Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Seminar in compliance with the Republic Act No. 11058 and Department Order No. 252, Series of 2025. This law requires all workers to complete an 8-hour OSH orientation to ensure a safe and conducive workplace.

The seminar emphasized the Institution’s shared responsibility to provide hazard-free work environments and deliver complete job safety instructions. Key topics included workers’ right to know the hazards associated with their work, basic knowledge and skills needed to identify risks, and preventive measures. In addition, emergency preparedness, including evacuation procedures and drills, was discussed.

By empowering employees to recognize risks and participate in safety measures, DLSMHSI strengthens its commitment to advocating a proactive safety culture and protecting the well-being of all its stakeholders.

CCDSL-NSTP Unit of DLSMHSI Talks about BFA, BLS, and DRRM: An Outreach Program

The Center for Community Development and Service-Learning (CCDSL) – National Service Training Program (NSTP) of De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute (DLSMHSI) successfully conducted a seminar on Basic First Aid, Basic Life Support, and Disaster Risk Reduction and Management with Skills Enhancement on November 25, 2025, at 1:00 PM at the Carsadang Bago Elementary School in Carsadang Bago 1, City of Imus, Cavite. The seminar carried the theme "KUMILOS para sa Kahandaan, Kaligtasan at Katatagan" and was attended by 120 students from Grades 3 to 5.

The seminar featured an engaging session on Disaster Risk Reduction and Management, including earthquake, fire, flood, and typhoon preparedness, led by Assoc. Prof. Rolly J. Capistrano. Ms. Mariel C. Ramos discussed Basic First Aid, covering topics such as Go Bag preparation, triage, the 3P’s and 3C’s, wound care, burns, and sprains or fractures. Basic Life Support, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for infants, children, and adults, was demonstrated by Dr. Lorenzo Alvin T. Capio.

In the second part of the seminar, Assoc. Prof. Roel B. Hayag, NSTP Chair, demonstrated various bandaging techniques, while Dr. Julius U. Tepora led a hands-on CPR demonstration. Students then practiced and demonstrated their skills in both bandaging and CPR under expert guidance.

This activity was initiated by the Carsadang Bago Elementary School Alumni Association, led by President Roel B. Hayag, Vice President for Internal Virginia R. Anuat, Vice President for External Marissa G. Rosas, Vice President for Finance Mary Grace G. Solomon, and Vice President for Publicity Reinalyn B. Kahandaan sa Panahon ng Sakuna” Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) Orientation on November 11, 2025, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM at the DLSMHSI Library Auditorium. With the theme “Pagtitiyak ng Kaligtasan at Pagpapatuloy ng Serbisyo sa Panahon ng Sakuna,” the event brought together committee members, department representatives, and institutional leaders for a full-day learning session focused on strengthening DLSMHSI’s culture of preparedness, resilience, and business continuity.

The program began with welcome remarks from Mr. Alexander B. Rodriguez, Director of the Business Continuity Department (BCD), who highlighted the importance of institutional resilience and collective responsibility in disaster preparedness. DLSMHSI President Dr. Antonio B. Ramos and Chancellor Mr. Ferdinand L. Berba emphasized that readiness is essential to sustaining the Institute’s mission of healthcare, education, and service. Ms. Maria Theresa S. Bongiad, Senior Manager for BCD, provided an overview of the orientation and outlined its objectives, setting the tone for a meaningful and collaborative learning experience.

Participants attended comprehensive DRRM sessions led by experts and partner agencies. Capt. Joebert Q. Tolentino Jr. of the Disaster and Emergency Responders International presented foundational DRRM concepts, disaster risks, and strategies to build institutional resilience. Mr. Reynor S. Calzado, Head of the Dasmariñas City DRRM Office, shared methods to strengthen coordination between DLSMHSI and the local government. Mr. Mark Joseph G. Bawalan, Operations and Warning Division Head of the Cavite PDRRMO, offered a provincial perspective on supporting healthcare and learning continuity during large-scale emergencies.

The day also included a hands-on workshop facilitated by Mr. Ferdinand J. Banggiacan of the Philippine Disaster Resilience Foundation (PDRF), where participants identified their departments’ critical functions and potential disruption scenarios. This activity laid the foundation for developing comprehensive Business Continuity Plans (BCPs) for all critical departments and units within the Institute.

This orientation is the first major initiative of the Business Continuity Department, preparing the way for future workshops focused on drafting and refining BCPs. The BCD Team expressed gratitude to the Resilience Committee for guiding the program, as well as to Mr. Noel L. Lacuesta, Senior Manager for Safety Management, Ms. Roanne Quiambao, Administrative Assistant of the BCD Team, and the Special Projects staff, whose dedication ensured the smooth preparation and successful execution of the event.

On September 29, 2025, De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute warmly welcomed delegates from Good Samaritan Colleges (GSC), Cabanatuan City, for a benchmarking visit focused on academic quality assurance and program enhancement in the Bachelor of Science in Radiologic Technology (BSRT).

The benchmarking activity, organized by the Academic Partnerships and External Relations (APER) Department in collaboration with the College of Medical Imaging and Therapy (CMIT), aimed to support GSC’s preparation for the upcoming PAASCU accreditation of its BSRT program.

The visit began with a welcome program starting a courtesy call with the Vice Chancellor for Academics, Prof. Dr. Naomi de Aro, underscoring the shared Lasallian commitment to quality health sciences education, followed by an institutional presentation, introducing DLSMHSI’s colleges and programs, including its School of Advanced Studies. Both institutions also shared introductory videos highlighting their respective academic environments.

The benchmarking meeting and discussion on best practices in curriculum development, teaching-learning processes, and quality assurance systems that contribute to academic excellence.

The CMIT team also shared the innovative initiatives of the College, particularly the creation of a new program, such as the Bachelor of Science in Nuclear Technology and the recently launched Master of Science in Radiologic Technology, highlighting the Institute’s commitment to continuous academic advancement. DLSMHSI Welcomes National Tainan Junior College of Nursing for Academic and Cultural Partnership Visit

In its continuing pursuit of global academic collaboration, the De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute (DLSMHSI) welcomed delegates from the National Tainan Junior College of Nursing (NTIN), Taiwan, last August 12, 2025 for an initial meeting on potential partnerships in internationalization, student exchange, and nursing education.

The meeting, held under the initiative of Academic Partnerships and External Relations (APER). The visit was led by Asst. Prof. John Michael B. Medina, Chair for Affiliations, Networks, and Linkages, together with Ms. Jenny Mae Elmedulan (Administrative Assistant, APER), Ms. Miriam Gallardo (Registrar’s Representative), and Ms. Ma. Annalyn Ferma (Student Life and Engagement Representative).NTIN’s delegation was composed of Dr. Mei-Chih Huang, President; Dr. Fen-Zhi Yao, Director for Student Affairs; Dr. Ching-Chuan Liu, Professor Emeritus; and Dr. Ming-Hao Liu, Consultant.

The dialogue focused on the creation of a Cultural and Language Immersion Program for NTIN students from the Departments of Nursing and Senior Citizen Services. The proposed immersion—targeted for August to September 2026—will accommodate 30 students and feature rotations in Emergency Care, Intensive Care, Geriatrics, Palliative Care, and Psychiatry. The visit served as the foundation for the development of a Cultural and Language Immersion Program, designed for NTIN’s Nursing and Senior Citizen Services students. The proposed program—may take place in August to September 2026—will involve NTIN students who will be immersed in DLSMHSI’s clinical and community learning environments.

After the meeting, the delegates from the NTIN were given an informative and immersive guided tour of the facilities of De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute (DLSMHSI). The tour highlighted the Institute’s state-of-the-art hospital, advanced simulation laboratories, and innovative learning environments, all of which reflect its commitment to excellence in medical and health sciences education. The delegates were welcomed and accommodated by Dr. Conrado P. Crisostomo, Vice Chancellor for Hospital Operations, along with distinguished faculty members from the College of Nursing.

DLSMHSI Academic Leaders Tackle Future-Ready Education at ASAGA 2025

The De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute (DLSMHSI) Academic Administrators gathered for the Academic Services Administrators General Assembly (ASAGA) 2025 held on October 6–7, 2025, at One Tagaytay Hotel Suites, Tagaytay City. The event revolved around the theme, “Leading with Purpose: Advancing Excellence through Innovation, Quality, and Collaboration.”

The event was graced by our President, Dr Antonio B. Ramos; Chancellor, Mr. Ferdinand L. Berba; and Vice Chancellor for Academics, Dr. Naomi M. de Aro, who shared inspiring messages that set the tone for two days of learning, collaboration, and reflection.

Day 1 featured insightful sessions, including the Keynote Talk on “Lasallian Transformative Leadership in a Disruptive Era: Shaping the Future of Academic Administration” delivered by Br. Luis Angelo E. Enriquez FSC. The talk explored the essence of Lasallian leadership amid rapid educational and societal changes. This was followed by a Plenary on “Future-Ready Education: Curriculum Innovation and Digital Transformation for Academic Excellence” by Dr. Ricarte A. Gapuz, Jr. Dr. Gapuz highlighted the evolving landscape of higher education and the critical role of digital transformation in ensuring relevance, engagement, and excellence in teaching and learning. The evening wrapped up with a lively fellowship night that celebrated collaboration and camaraderie filled with singing, dancing, games, and a showcase of talents from our fellow administrators.

On the second day of the ASAGA, areas of much importance to DLSMHSI were discussed such as AI policy, quality assurance, and internationalization.

Dr. Reynaldo G. Cruz's "Consultation and Orientation on XAI-Powered IQA (QualiAx) and Revised AI Policy" reminded the administrators on the ethical use of AI to ensure that the institution's standards and values as well as the laws will be upheld despite the growing trends in AI development for business and education. The assembly was able to reach a consensus on procedures, acceptable use, incident reporting and escalation, compliance and accountability, as well as feedback and review. In addition, Dr. Cruz also discussed the QualiAx Project which is an AI-powered IQA system which helps in achieving a more efficient and predictive instead of reactive quality assurance.

The final plenary session, “Internationalization in Health Sciences Education: Opportunities, Challenges, and Innovation,” delivered by Dr. Pelagio C. Labang, Jr., highlighted the benefits, challenges, and future directions of internationalization, as well as opportunities for DLSMHSI students and faculty in global education and research.

Overall, the second day was instructive and beneficial for the administrators who attended as the content discussed will motivate and inspire continuous improvement in the administration of the Academic Services.

Strategic Planning in Action: DLSMHSI Leadership Drives Direction at 4th Quarter Management Review

On September 15, 2025, De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute's (DLSMHSI) leaders gathered at the De La Salle - Villarosa Convention Hall for the School Year 2024–2025 Quarter 4 Management Review (QMR) of the Institute.

DLSMHSI President Dr. Antonio Ramos opened the session with an inspiring message emphasizing agility, customer experience, innovation, and growth as key drivers of the Institute’s future. “We must adapt to change while staying true to our Lasallian values,” he affirmed. Dr. Ramos also announced two major infrastructure projects—the construction of a new student dormitory and a 500-bed hospital—as part of DLSMHSI’s bold legacy of expansion and service.

Chancellor and Chief Administrative Officer Mr. Ferdinand Berba presented a data-driven institutional performance report, revealing a 29% overall growth, including a 34% increase in hospital services and a 15% rise in academic program performance. While acknowledging opportunities to strengthen scholarship and charity care initiatives, he called on leaders to continue championing inclusivity, compassion, and excellence.

The review also highlighted DLSMHSI’s continuous efforts to enhance customer experience. Senior Manager for Customer-Centric and Growth Karla Loisse Menguita introduced the Z.E.A.L. initiative and the Institute’s plans for a Viber channel, which will provide DLSMHSI employees with information and reminders on enhancing customer service. “We’re building a culture of responsiveness,” she said, underscoring the positive impact of these digital tools.

Quality Management Director Carmi Anahaw reinforced the importance of governance, performance tracking, and continuous improvement. Her team proposed integrating Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) into departmental reviews and launching a Quality Advocate Award to recognize excellence. She also announced upcoming Lean Six Sigma and Project Management training sessions beginning October 20, 2025.

Other agenda highlights included updates on finance, risk management, environmental safety, and strategic direction, with a comparative financial report between SY 2425 Q1 and SY 2526 Q1 set to guide future planning and institutional resilience.

With over 200 leaders in attendance, the SY 2425 Q4 Management Review served not just as a strategic meeting but as a reaffirmation of DLSMHSI’s mission to nurture life through faith, service, and innovation.

DLSUMC Observes AIDS Candlelight Memorial 2025

On May 30, 2025, De La Salle University Medical Center (DLSUMC) honored the global AIDS Candlelight Memorial with the theme “A Tribute to Lives Lost, A Light of Hope to Those Living with HIV.” The event aimed to raise awareness, promote compassion, and support the ongoing response to HIV.

The day's activities included a Lay Forum on HIV, providing valuable information to attendees. Free HIV testing was also offered at Clinic 2121 to encourage early detection and provide access to care.

A solemn offertory Mass was held at the St. John Paul II Chapel, followed by a candle lighting ceremony of the Red Ribbon at the MAC Lobby. This poignant moment served as a tribute to those who have passed away and offered a symbol of hope and strength to individuals currently living with HIV.

Through its participation in the AIDS Candlelight Memorial, DLSUMC reinforces its commitment to community health and its support for those affected by HIV.

DLSMHSI Commemorates Kwibuka 2025: Honoring Rwanda’s Legacy of Remembrance and Peace

On June 3, 2025, DLSMHSI held a solemn commemoration of Kwibuka, Rwanda’s annual remembrance of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. The event served as a meaningful reflection on humanity’s shared responsibility to stand against hatred, violence, and division.

Spearheaded by the International Student Relations Unit (ISRU), in collaboration with the International Student Association (ISA) and the Internationalization and External Affairs Office (IEAO), the talk reaffirmed the Institution’s commitment to embracing diversity, promoting peace, and building a united global community.

We were honored by the presence of Dr. Pelagio C. Labang Jr. from CHED Region IV-A, who expressed his support for the initiative and emphasized the role of education in peacebuilding. The event was made even more profound through the participation of the Rwandan Community in the Philippines, represented by their leader, Mr. Mugisha Goodness Laurier; Ms. Ishimwe Ornella Kelia, Vice President; and Mr. Bruno Shema, a DLSMHSI student. Their heartfelt reflections helped the audience understand the deep pain and enduring hope that Kwibuka symbolizes.

The program concluded with an inspiring message from Her Excellency Mukasine Marie Claire, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Rwanda to the Philippines, residing in Tokyo, Japan. Her moving words touched the hearts of all attendees, reminding us of the enduring call to foster reconciliation and peace wherever we may be. As Lasallians, we are called not only to remember but to be active bearers of peace, agents of compassion, and stewards of healing in a world that needs it now more than ever.

DLSMHSI Enters Housing Partnership with Newtowne Dasmariñas

In a groundbreaking move to support accessible housing for its employees, DLSMHSI is pleased to share that Wee Community Developers Inc. is developing Newtowne Dasmariñas, a soon-to-rise condominium project in the city. DLSMHSI employees are offered special, discounted rates for select units—providing a more attainable housing option close to the workplace.

The collaboration officially commenced on May 23, 2025, with a due diligence process for the proposed employee-housing partnership. Led by the Strategic Management Office, the proposal underwent a thorough review beginning June 17, 2025, by key DLSMHSI offices—including Legal and Compliance, Finance, Facilities Management, Human Resource Management, and Environmental, Safety, and Occupational Health.

A key milestone was reached on June 23, 2025, when Wee Comm executives met with the DLSMHSI Management Committee to align on project objectives and expectations. This was followed by a site visit to Harbour Park Residences in Mandaluyong on July 3, 2025, where the team gained firsthand insight into Wee Comm’s construction quality and design approach through one of their completed projects.

The series of collaborative efforts reached a key moment on July 16, 2025, during the on-site Information Session held at Narra Hall. Representatives from Wee Community Developers Inc. returned to present more in-depth project updates and respond to additional questions from employees. The session served as a meaningful step forward in transforming the long-envisioned housing initiative into a concrete reality.

More than just a housing offer, this initiative underscores DLSMHSI’s deep commitment to the well-being of its people—extending support beyond the workplace by helping employees secure homes that are affordable, accessible, and within the community they serve.

Enhancing Service at the Frontlines: Security Personnel Undergo Customer Experience Training

As part of its ongoing commitment to deliver exceptional customer service and strengthen the stakeholder experience, De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute (DLSMHSI) successfully held a Customer Experience Training for Security Guards on July 22 and 23, 2025, at Narra Hall. The training was facilitated by Ms. Karla Loisse Menguita from the Institutional Communications and Marketing Office – Customer-Centric and Growth Section.

This targeted customer experience training aimed to boost the communication skills of security personnel, improve first-point-of-contact interactions, and align their service approach with DLSMHSI’s signature ZEAL Customer Experience Program—Zoom in Compassion, Exceed Expectations, Act with Accountability, and Love What You Do.

Security guards engaged in interactive learning sessions that emphasized:

● Delivering warm and welcoming greetings

● Demonstrating professional demeanor

● Managing difficult situations with empathy and respect

To ensure relevance, the training incorporated real-life scenarios and actual customer feedback gathered from DLSMHSI entry and exit points. These exercises allowed participants to reflect on their daily encounters and identify ways to improve their service delivery.

A highlight of the training was the collection of ZEAL Cards, where each participant made a personal service commitment. Some of the heartfelt pledges included:

● "Pangako ko, tapat ako sa aking trabaho."

● "Ipinapangako ko na ako ay laging tutulong sa customer."

● "Ipinapangako ko pong palaging ngingiti at di na magse-cellphone sa oras ng duty."

Participants also shared key takeaways, expressing that the training helped them understand the true essence of genuine, compassionate customer service. They noted that receiving feedback and being allowed to reflect motivated them to further improve in their roles as frontline staff.

This initiative reflects DLSMHSI’s dedication to building a customer-focused culture, ensuring that every patient, student, visitor, and employee is welcomed with professionalism, respect, and empathy. Additional customer service training programs are scheduled for other frontline personnel across the Institute to further enhance the DLSMHSI customer journey.

The Student Affairs – Diversity and Inclusivity Unit, in collaboration with Muslim volunteers from various colleges of DLSMHSI, organized a special event in observance of the sacred days of Dhul Hijjah. Muslim students from different colleges were invited to come together, celebrating the 9th day of Dhul Hijjah by breaking their fast and sharing reflections on the significance of this holy day in the Islamic calendar.

The event aimed to deepen awareness of Dhul Hijjah’s spiritual importance, encourage Muslim students to integrate their faith into academic and personal life, and promote well-being during religious observance by highlighting the importance of hydration, especially while fasting.

Esteemed speakers delivered a series of insightful talks and discussions: Dr. Vic C. Raciles from the University of Perpetual Help; Dr. Naheeda D. Mustofa, Vice President of the Islamic Medical Association of the Philippines, Inc. (IMAN); and President Alinaid Angcob from the Students Association for Islamic Affairs, Inc. A special segment on the importance of hydration was also presented by representatives from Pocari Sweat.

The event served as a meaningful space for Muslim students and staff of DLSMHSI to bond with their fellow brothers and sisters in faith over their first iftar (the evening meal that breaks the fast). Attendees expressed deep gratitude to the Student Affairs – Diversity and Inclusivity Unit for their thoughtful initiative and for reaching out to the Muslim community in organizing and hosting this memorable event.

Whether he’s in the clinic or mentoring young doctors, Dr. Lapak continues to live out the Lasallian values of faith, service, communion, and reverence for life . But who is the man behind the white coat? We sat down with Dr. Lapak to learn more about his journey.

The Calling to Heal

From an early age, Dr. Lapak felt a pull towards healing. "I was drawn to healing, not just the body, but the human spirit," he shares. "Pediatrics was a calling where I could bring hope and long-term impact." This deep-seated desire to make a difference in the lives of children and their families is the driving force behind his career.

Overcoming Challenges with Resilience

Dr. Lapak's journey hasn't been without its challenges. He candidly shares that balancing complex clinical work with teaching is no easy feat. "But challenges have taught me resilience, empathy, and the power of mentorship, especially during emotionally intense moments with young patients and their families," he says. These experiences have shaped him into a leader who understands the importance of emotional intelligence and strong support systems in the medical field.

As the head of Continuing Professional Development, Dr. Lapak is a strong advocate for lifelong learning. "Quality care doesn’t rest on one physician. DLSMHSI Plants 1,400+ Medicinal and Vegetable Seedlings for Climate Action

The activity is part of NSTP 101 Module 6: Integrating Laudato Si’ in Lasallian Climate Change Adaptation and Sustainable Environment Stewardship, supporting global efforts to reduce greenhouse gases and promote ecosystem restoration.

Led by the Lasallian Formation and Social Action (LFSA) and the National Service Training Program (NSTP) Unit under the Center for Community Development and Service-Learning (CCDSL), the initiative brought together faculty, staff, and students in a unified push for a greener future.

As part of its commitment to environmental sustainability, De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute (DLSMHSI) planted over 1,400 medicinal and vegetable seedlings during the “Tanim at Ani-Mo” tree-growing activity. The seedlings were planted in a 100 sqm area behind the Administrative and Finance Center and a 300 sqm lot in the DLSMHSI extension area.

In Grateful Memory of Dr. Vivian Que-Azcona

De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute (DLSMHSI) honors the life and legacy of Dr. Vivian Que-Azcona—a visionary leader, generous benefactor, and strong advocate of healthcare and education.

Her contributions are deeply embedded in the Institution through the Dr. Mariano Que College of Pharmacy, named in honor of her late father. She also played a key role in establishing the Museum of the Human Body.

Through the Mercury Drug Foundation, she empowered aspiring pharmacists by granting scholarships to Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy students at DLSMHSI, nurturing countless futures with compassion and hope.

In 2020, DLSMHSI recognized her extraordinary impact by awarding her its first-ever honorary Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa).

To commemorate the 40th day of her passing, DLSMHSI and the Dr. Mariano Que College of Pharmacy held a Memorial Mass on May 14, 2025. DMQCP Dean Mr. Louie Legaspi shared a heartfelt reflection, recalling “Time matters to Doc Vivian, and she always made time for what truly matters.”

The ceremony concluded with a touching song tribute by DMQCP Student Council member, Harneen Solis, echoing the love and gratitude of the Lasallian community.

De La Salle University Medical Center (DLSUMC) held a blessing ceremony on March 10, 2025 for the newly developed Renal Care Center (RCC) Annex on the third floor of DLSUMC Building 1, which adds 10 hemodialysis beds to the existing 40 beds in the main RCC at the Medical Arts Center. This expansion aims to accommodate more patients requiring specialized renal care and improve access to treatment.

Spearheaded by the ESOH Department, the training featured hands-on exercises and real-life simulations, ensuring participants were well-prepared for any fire-related emergency. Truly, our alumni Dr. Myra Martin and Dr. Mark Alcid have held the De La Salle banner high as they extended their hands to students who once aspired to be Lasallians and are now part of DLSMHSI. It was made possible through the doctors’ generous financial support to the Scholarship Fund of the Institution. As of [month and year or school year], these alumni have sponsored one (1) full scholarship and four (4) one-time financial assistance grants to deserving College of Medicine students.

On January 7, 2025, Dr. Martin and Dr. Alcid visited their Alma Mater to meet their friends—and, ultimately, their scholars. The few hours spent together over lunch were heartwarming, as the students expressed their gratitude to their sponsors whose generosity gave them access to quality medical education and the opportunity to become future Lasallian medical professionals. Since then, the program has completed 8 batches, each building on the knowledge and experiences shared in the online asynchronous modules. These participants have already completed the five (5) prerequisite online modules, making them well-prepared for this enriching next step in their formation journey.

Day 1: Holy Mass and Employee Recognition

The week commenced with a Holy Mass honoring Saint Miguel Febres Cordero, marking 46 years of gratitude, grace, and growth at DLSMHSI. This was followed by the Annual Employee Recognition and Green Zeal Awards, acknowledging employees’ dedication and contributions.

Day 2: Wellness and Kindness in Action

The celebration continued highlighting well-being and compassion. The Institutional Lasallian Wellness Seminar emphasized mental well-being, providing valuable insights for the community to be more sensitive and vigilant towards others’ mental health. Meanwhile the Food for Hope initiative extended kindness by offering meals and support to Service OPD patients, embodying the Lasallian spirit of service.

Day 3: Energized by Talent and Service

The De La Salle Animo Center came alive with the LS Days Opening Ceremony and Dance Competition, showcasing the dynamic energy of the community. Simultaneously, student leaders participated in the National Service Reserve Corps Orientation, reinforcing their commitment to national service and volunteerism.

Day 4: Crowning Achievements and Friendly Rivalry

Excitement filled the air as Jimuelle Marasigan and Audrey Mikaela Bayani were crowned Mr. and Ms. DLSMHSI 2025. Meanwhile, the KRATOS: Trials of Ward video game competition brought students together in a spirited display of gaming prowess. On a different note, the Brothers Open House provided a deeper understanding of the lives and mission of the Lasallian Borthers at De La Salle Residencia.

Day 5: Music, Celebration, and Fireworks

One of the most anticipated events of the week, the Battle of the Bands, took center stage, featuring a special performance by the renowned band, Mayonnaise. The celebration ended with a spectacular fireworks display.

Day 6: Honoring Legacy and Growth

The week-long celebration concluded with the 2nd Grand Alumni Homecoming, themed “Growth and Legacy.” This special gathering honored the first-ever Outstanding Alumni Awardees, recognizing their significant contributions to their respective fields.

Share and Care: Building a Better Tomorrow Through Infrastructure at DLSMHSI

One of the key initiatives of the DLSMHSI Share and Care Program is infrastructure. Team Share and Care believes that building a better tomorrow begins with creating spaces that can accommodate our students, patients, and the entire Lasallian community. To date, five (5) buildings have been completed, with two (2) more projects ongoing at the Annex Property of DLSMHSI. These developments enable the Institution to provide quality education and healthcare services to more young professionals and charity beneficiaries. To enhance security, a gate and fence were constructed, made possible through the generous support of our donors.

On December 6, 2023, the College of Medicine Class of 1983, led by Dr. Imelda Tolentino Lorenzo, an alumna and one of the benefactors of the Gate and Fence Project, visited to celebrate their 40th Anniversary. Their collective effort in supporting the Gate and Fence Project allowed them to reflect on the unity and camaraderie their class shared at the university decades ago. In addition to their contribution to the infrastructure project, they actively promoted environmental advocacy by organizing a Tree Planting Activity during the afternoon session of their reunion.

The unwavering support of donors in the Lasallian community continues to empower the Share and Care Program to provide more aid to those in need. In the August 2024 Medical Technologist Licensure Examination, DLSMHSI ranked Top 8 among the Top 10 Best Performing Schools.

Graduates also excelled in the October 2024 Chemist and Chemical Technician Licensure Examination and the October 2024 Physician Licensure Examination.

The November 2024 Philippine Nurses Licensure Examination produced six topnotchers, while the November 2024 Speech-Language Pathologist Licensure Examination had two topnotchers.

In December, graduates passed the Physical Therapy and Radiologic Technology Licensure Examinations, with one topnotcher each. Lastly, the Occupational Therapy Licensure Examination produced four topnotchers.

The De La Salle Angelo King Medical Research Center (DLSAKMRC) commemorated its 30th founding anniversary during Research Week 2024, held from November 11 to 15, 2024. The theme, “ Research Services @30: Moving Forward as the Preferred Research Center” , celebrated three decades of accomplishments while setting the stage for future milestones in healthcare research.

Highlights included the launch of the 2024-2029 DLSMHSI Research Agenda, keynote addresses by Dr. Jaime Montoya of the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD) and Dr. Freddie Bulauan of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), and a Clinical Trial Summit featuring experts discussing the clinical trial landscape in the Philippines.

Throughout the week, the Institution showcased the breadth of its research endeavors. Student researchers presented innovative projects during the 17th DLSMHSI Students’ Research Contest, while resident doctors shared groundbreaking case studies in the 36th Annual Residents’ Research Contest. Faculty members also took center stage in a research forum that emphasized the pivotal role of academic researchers in driving innovation.

The event concluded with a seminar on health innovation, featuring talks on anti-dengue drug development and biomedical engineering milestones. The Research Gala honored key contributors, including the Angelo King Foundation, whose generosity helped establish the center.

As the celebration ended, DLSAKMRC reaffirmed its commitment to advancing medical and health research, further solidifying its dedication to becoming the preferred medical research center.

JBI’s First Intensive Workshop for DLSMHSI-UST Australia Awards Fellowship

As part of the Australia Awards Fellowship Round 19, the first three-day systematic reviews training conducted by Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) trainers was held from October 8 to 10, 2024, at Discovery Primea Hotel, Makati.

This one-year fellowship aims to leverage Australian education and training to enhance the use of research evidence in health policy and practice in the Philippines. It will address knowledge and skill gaps in developing, conducting, and reporting high-quality systematic reviews to inform clinical decision-making, guideline development, and health technology assessment for universal healthcare. Building on previous collaborations with the University of Adelaide, the fellowship will foster a network to promote evidence-based practice in the country.

A total of 13 fellows participated in the workshop, including three fellows from the Center for Health Research and Movement Science, University of Santo Tomas (UST), and ten fellows from De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute. The following are the fellows from the DLSMHSI:

On October 9, 2024, a guest lecture and networking reception was held with the theme “National Health Priorities and Universal Health Care: The Role of Evidence Syntheses,” attended by key stakeholders from government, academia, and professional organizations. Dr. Lester M. Tan of the Department of Health (DOH) discussed National Health Priorities, while Dr. Ruth Divine Agustin covered the role of Evidence Synthesis in Clinical Practice Guidelines. Dr. Celso P. Pagatpatan, Jr. and Ms. Bianca Pilla from JBI provided overviews of the Fellowship Program and preparations for the next workshop in Australia, where fellows will complete a systematic review for presentation in 2025.

We join our Lasallian family worldwide to celebrate the International Lasallian Days of Peace

(ILDP) from September 21, 2024 until October 21, 2024. This 19th-anniversary celebration is centered on the theme “1LaSalle: Our Pilgrimage Towards Peace.” Reflecting this commitment, the Lasallian East Asia District emphasizes peace advocacy through the campaign slogan, “LEAD with passion, LEAD for Peace.” We are reminded to stand in solidarity with communities experiencing global conflicts and crises. Alongside this, we are also celebrating Philippine Lasallian Human Rights, Democracy, and Peace Month (PLHRDPM) organized annually by the De La Salle Philippines-Lasallian Justice and Peace Commission, with participation from all 16 La Salle schools in the country, whose Social Action Offices serve as its arms.

We commenced our celebration with a Solemn Mass, followed by a Candle Lighting Ceremony to honor Martial Law victims. These significant activities were organized by the DLSP-Lasallian Justice and Peace Commission. Fr. Ned Nazareno presided over the Holy Mass, helping us reflect and pray. The Candle Lighting Ceremony reminded us of the sacrifices made for human rights and justice, thereby recommitting us to these values in our community. This event was organized by Mr. Ryan Mendoza, the program head for Lasallian Advocacy, a unit within the Lasallian Formation and Social Action Department. Then, during the Flag Ceremony on October 7, 2024, at the De La Salle Animo Center, the themes of PLHRDPM and ILDP were woven into the prayers, reflections, and Lasallian guiding principles for the occasion. This integration helped raise awareness among the DLSMHSI community about the importance of the month-long celebration.

The team included key members of DLSMHSI management team such as Dr. Naomi M. de Aro, Vice Chancellor for Academics; Br. Lawrence Aikee R. Esmeli FSC, Vice Chancellor for Lasallian Mission, Linkages, and Development; Dr. Ma. Cecilia D. Licuan, Dean of the College of Rehabilitation Sciences; and Prof. Monina G. Dimas, Dean of the College of Nursing, who met with representatives from the University of Southern California (USC) to discuss future partnerships, particularly in Occupational Therapy.

Championing Change: DLSUMC Honors Patient Safety and Quality Innovators By: Maria Lourdes Afable | Patient Safety

The Patient Safety Office launched its Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Projects as part of the World Patient Safety Day Celebration on September 27, 2024. This initiative aimed to encourage hospital units and departments to develop and implement small-scale quality improvement projects that could significantly enhance patient care quality and safety. To support and guide the implementation of these initiatives, the Institutional Quality Management Office (IQMO) was tapped to provide expertise throughout the quality improvement journey.

A total of four entries were submitted for this initiative, showcasing innovative approaches to improving patient safety and healthcare quality.

BEFORE THE BLADE: Gearing Towards Preoperative Excellence

The Nursing Services Department (NSD) launched the Before the Blade project to improve compliance with preoperative requirements, ensuring safety, efficiency, and effectiveness for both patients and the healthcare team. It addresses gaps such as incomplete documentation, unavailable or faulty surgical tools, and missed preparation steps such as improper site markings or retained personal items.

By strengthening adherence to protocols, the project minimizes intraoperative risks, prevents delays and cancellations, and improves surgical outcomes. It also streamlines processes, optimizes resource use, lowers costs by preventing adverse events, and enhances patient experience through better preparation and smoother recovery.

Every Breath You Take: A Quality Improvement Journey Toward Zero VAPP

The Medical Professional Services (MPS) launched the Every Breath You Take project to address the rising incidence of Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia (VAP) in DLSUMC. Despite 100% compliance with the VAP Care Bundle since 2022, cases rose to 8.4 per 1,000 ventilator days within six months. This initiative aims to reduce VAP through enhanced monitoring, better adherence to infection prevention protocols, and expanded bundle implementation.

By lowering VAP cases, the project enhances patient safety, shortens hospital stays, minimizes prolonged antibiotic use, and reduces healthcare costs. Improved infection control also ensures safer care, boosting patient satisfaction and trust in the institution.

Time Is On The Line: The Standardization of Releasing Diagnostic Tests

The Center of Excellence (COE) launched the Time Is On The Line project to standardize the release of diagnostic tests and address turnaround time (TAT) delays across units. Inconsistencies in procedures and the lack of a standardized approach caused inefficiencies. The project aims to establish a uniform process for outpatient results, ensuring accuracy, efficiency, and better patient care. Baseline TAT data will be analyzed to measure performance, identify gaps, and track improvements.

Timely and accurate results enhance patient safety by supporting prompt decisions and treatment. Reduced wait times improve satisfaction, while workflow efficiency boosts revenue and optimizes resource use.

One Prick, Big Risk: The Alarming Reality of Needlestick Injuries

The Hospital Administrative and Support Services (HASS) launched the One Prick, Big Risk project to address the persistent issue of needlestick injuries (NSIs) at DLSUMC. NSIs pose serious health risks, including the transmission of bloodborne pathogens, affecting both primary users and secondary handlers.

The project analyzed hospital-wide NSI cases from March to July 2024 and three years of incidents in the Housekeeping Unit, identifying key factors like improper disposal and lack of awareness. These findings support improved preventive measures and policy enhancements for institution-wide adoption to strengthen safety and minimize risks.

Awarding Ceremony

The awarding ceremony was held on March 20, 2025, at Narra Hall and was attended by various

hospital representatives. Dr. Conrado Crisostomo, Vice Chancellor for Hospital Services, delivered the opening remarks, while a special message was given by Dr. Antonio Ramos, President of DLSMHSI.

Esteemed judges—Dr. Malen Gellido (former Chief Patient Safety Officer), Engr. Manuel Toledo (former TQM Administrator), and Mr. Billmore Sarte (Senior Supervisor for Medical Programs and Packages Development)—evaluated the projects based on their impact, innovation, and sustainability.

Amidst the excitement of the festivities, the celebration offered a diverse array of seminars and competitions. Attendees had the opportunity to participate in seminars like the Administrators’ Lasallian Leadership Formation Program, Vital Formation Program Orientation, and the Volunteers Forum: #TaraMaglingkodTayo. In the display of unity and camaraderie, nearly a thousand employees gathered at the Animo Center on July 20, 2023, for the Lasalyanong Town Hall: Taospusong Pasasalamat hosted by Mr. James Antonio, Dr. Ardith Dominguez-Tan, and Dr. JA Amistad.

It is a momentous event celebrating leadership, welcoming change, and unveiling innovations. It highlights the accomplishments of the outgoing esteemed vice-chancellors, deans, and directors while warmly welcoming incoming administrators.

DLSMHSI President Dr. Tony B. Ramos transcended the event with more enthusiasm as he showcased DLSMHSI’s goal to achieve the forward-looking vision of the 4Ps. He explained the vision of the Institution to become the preferred school, hospital, research center, and employer.

Preferred School

DLSMHSI aims to become the preferred world-class medical school in the Philippines as enrollees increase to 6,530 for School Year 2022-2023. The College of Dentistry, headed by its Dean, Dr. Mariano T. Maglutac, Jr., and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, led by its Dean, Prof. Ma. Teresa A. Sigua, were established for the said academic year. BS Nursing and BS Physical Therapy reached Level 3 and 2 PAASCU Reaccreditation, respectively. In addition, in keeping with the mission to provide Lasallian education accessible for those who are deserving but are in need, the Institution’s scholar students also increased in number.

Lastly, Dr. Tony commends how DLSMHSI continues to soar on Board Examination Performance as well as attained CHED Autonomous Status. Furthermore, the management works together to provide classrooms, curriculum enhancements, and advanced facilities to attract the brightest minds, both students and educators, in a nurturing environment.

Preferred Hospital

Dr. Tony warmly welcomed the recently employed nurses and other medical staff, which could result in bigger occupancy rates making Lasallian care accessible for many.

Building upon DLSUMCs rich legacy of healthcare, DLSMHSI is the first in Cavite to offer Positron Emission Tomography and Computed Tomography (PET CT) to evaluate some cancers, neurodegenerative disorders, and heart problems. In addition, Plastic and Aesthetic surgery packages were launched and handled by the DLSUMCs team of plastic surgeons, which guarantees a safe and quality procedure.

On top of that, redevelopment projects are placed for DLSUMC to become the preferred destination for healthcare services having the goal of not only treating ailments but championing preventive care, innovation, and compassionate support.

Preferred Research

Dr. Tony described DLSMHSI-Angelo King Medical Research Center as part of the Institution that continues to work with Local Government Units to disseminate information against COVID-19 and other diseases. The goal is for it to become a research powerhouse through the reorganization and develop groundbreaking discoveries. The Institution aims to push the boundaries of knowledge and drive transformational advancement in various fields. The vision is for DLSMHSI-AKMRC to become the go-to destination for researchers, scholars, and researchers to become a driver of positive impact on society.

As the Institution visualizes every stakeholder to move forward together, DLSMHSI acknowledges that its people are its greatest asset, which is why the Institution is committed to cultivating a workplace that attracts, nurtures, and keeps exceptional talents. Another significant part of the town hall meeting was the introduction of the augmented uniforms, pranced by the Management Committee members synthesizing functionality and aesthetics, which also underscores the commitment to creating an environment where tradition and innovation coexist harmoniously. Attendees marveled at the thoughtful design because of the contemporary touch of practicality as well as comfort.

The program concluded with a special announcement wherein a golden buzzer was placed in the middle of the stage. The crowd cheered in enthusiasm and was eventually revealed to everyone in attendance.

To refuel and engage with one another, a sumptuous lunch was provided.

Overall, the town hall meeting was an extraordinary day that encapsulated appreciation, camaraderie, and innovation as the Institution aims to Move As One under a shared vision of progress and excellence. The spirit of this event inarguably serves as a beacon of collective efforts toward continued success and growth as an Institution.

The ASEAN University Network (AUN) is an autonomous organization established under ASEAN and the mandate of Ministers responsible for higher education in ASEAN countries, dealing with the promotion of human resource development in the field of higher education within ASEAN and with its dialogue partners. The AUN-Quality Assurance (AUN-QA) Network is established to promote quality assurance in higher education institutions, raise the quality of higher education and collaborate with both the regional and international bodies for the benefit of the ASEAN community. Quality assurance in education shall produce quality graduates, meet labor market expectations, promote internationalization of profession and globalization, drive consumer protection, turn an elite university to an institute of mass higher education, respond to meet society’s needs in higher education, cultivate the increasing importance of mass higher education and facilitate student exchange and international cooperation.

The AUN-QA has certified the BS Nursing, BS Pharmacy and BS Radiologic Technology programs of DLSMHSI after having satisfactorily fulfilled the requirements and successfully passed the virtual assessment conducted on August 2-6, 2021. The certification is valid for five (5) years. Using the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) Model, various areas of the programs were assessed, such as:

Virtual interviews with administrators, Academic Teaching Faculty, students, alumni, and other stakeholders and tours of the College and institutional facilities were performed to validate the data contained in the SAR.

DLSMHSI is expected to reap the benefits and open opportunities for its students, faculty members and graduates through continuous quality assurance certified by national and international accrediting institutions. This is part of POSIBLE 2021, the Academics’ thrusts for SY2021-2022. Under the POsitive thrust, Academics shall explore strategies that would show confidence and hope that despite the pandemic, excellence in the academic programs, accreditation and quality assessment initiatives, faculty and staff development, and upgrading of facilities shall continue and shall even be intensified. The AUN-QA certification of academic programs is one of the priority areas under this thrust.

Academics has surpassed its own record of enrollment in SY 2022-2023 with a total of 6,528 students enrolled as of September 23, 2022. This is the highest statistics since SY 2015-2016.

Based on the rationalization, one (1) medical student is equivalent to four (4) undergraduate students in terms of fees and vice versa. The original target number of Medicine students across all levels is 1,101. The number of actual Medicine students enrolled is 1,150, which has an excess of 50 students from the target. This is equivalent to 200 undergraduate students.

The target number of students enrolled in SY 2022-2023 is 6,570. The actual number of students enrolled is 6,528, or 6,678 including the excess medicine students. This is 108 students more than the target, making Academics not only hit the target but posted a record-high enrollment in 8 school years.

Mr. Timothy Jay L. Bengala, faculty and principal investigator of the narra research presented the findings to the local press. The research aimed to determine whether different production processing methods for Narra extracts affected the quantity of polyphenolic compounds and their antioxidant property. Antioxidants are widely explored for their use in many diseases resulting from oxidative cellular damage by free radicals. The antioxidant property of dried Narra samples was evaluated using Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC). The ORAC score is a measure of the antioxidant capacity of different foods and supplements. Narra extract’s ORAC scores displayed high levels of antioxidant property placing it among the top 10% of USDA List of Food Items with antioxidant activity.

An open forum followed after the presentation. Mr. Bengala was accompanied by research contributors: Instructor. Sigfredo B. Mata, Chair for Research and Development, Prof. Dr. Alicia P. Catabay, Founding Dean of the College, and Associate Professor Louie Fernand D. Legaspi, current Dean of the College. The group highlighted the importance of safety in using dietary supplements, ethical considerations in the conservation of resources for research, and the potential of various ornamental plants for research.

The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) has released the approval for PhD in Health Sciences by Research, Doctor of Dental Medicine and BS in Clinical Psychology.

The Doctor of Philosophy in Health Sciences by Research aims to develop a high level of competence among health professionals in carrying out independent health research for the advancement of science and practice of their specific discipline as well as the broader health sciences. It highlights inter-professional approach and evidence synthesis as essential elements for the advancement of health care practice and education. This is a higher degree program by research. Full-time students can finish the program in three years while part-time students can complete it in 4-5 years.

The Doctor of Dental Medicine program is a combination of Pre-Professional and Professional courses that covers the Basic Medical subjects initially followed by the professional subjects specializing in Dentistry.

The BS in Clinical Psychology program covers a wide range of professional education subjects that will equip future graduates in helping individuals with mental health problems and apply psychological principles in real-life situations. It is a four-year semestral undergraduate program that caters to mental health wellness, different therapeutic interventions to treat and diagnose psychological behaviors, and proper administration of psychological tests. It is designed for students who want to pursue their careers in educational institutions, industrial companies, and health care settings.

The College of Medical Imaging Therapy (CMIT) held the blessing of its newest facility, the Nuclear Medicine Laboratory, on June 7, 2022. The event was graced by Dr. Teofilo San Luis Jr., former president of the Philippine Society of Nuclear Medicine; officials, experts, professionals, and faculty members in nuclear medicine, radiologic technology education and higher education; and Chancellor Dr. Antonio B. The Nuclear Medicine Laboratory is an adjunct of the CMIT laboratory, specifically created for the skills development and principles enhancement for the course Bachelor of Science in Nuclear Medicine Technology, a pioneering program in the Philippines. The Nuclear Medicine Laboratory was designed to mimic a nuclear medicine department in a hospital set-up. It currently contains the basic equipment needed by the students to understand basic principles, develop the competencies, and gain the confidence in handling radiopharmaceuticals. The College envisions developing the laboratory to also include gamma camera and other equipment for a full experience in handling nuclear medicine procedures as well as use the laboratory for research purposes.

The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) awarded a plaque of recognition to DLSMHSI as one of the participating Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) which supported the Hi-Ed Bayanihan Project, an initiative of CHED Regional Office IV which assisted faculty members as they transitioned to the flexible learning environment. DLSMHSI is one of the HEIs which provided free training in online learning and teaching modalities to 3,188 faculty members from 146 HEIs.

The awarding was held on June 13, 2022 during the inauguration and blessing of CHEDRO IV Building at Lipa City, Batangas. Vice Chancellor for Academics Dr. Juanito O. Cabanias received the award on behalf of DLSMHSI.

The De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute has approved the granting of the Professor Emeritus Award to Dr. Eduardo G. Gonzales for his exemplary performance and contribution to the field of Histology and to the Philippine medical education. Dr. Gonzales taught as a permanent full-time faculty of the College of Medicine for 37 years with the rank of Professor 15 until his mandatory retirement in 2016. He has been appointed as a Fixed Term Faculty (Full-time B) since 2016.

Dr. Gonzales’ teaching career started in 1975 when he taught at the University of the Philippines College of Medicine until 1979. He then transferred to Emilio Aguinaldo College of Medicine, now DLSMHSI College of Medicine. He was the first faculty member to obtain the rank Professor 15 in 2007, which was based on the merits of his teaching and scholarly work. He was the first recipient of the Most Distinguished Faculty Award in 2016.

His work in the Philippine medical education involved the development of the MD course of the innovative stepladder curriculum of the UP-Institute of Health Sciences (UP-IHS) in Tacloban City in 1978, the conceptualization of the Emilio Aguinaldo College of Medicine in 1979, the development of the Centro Escolar University School of Medicine in 2015 and the planning of the medical school for Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) in Zamboanga City as part of the UP College of Medicine-WHO project.

Dr. Gonzales has actively contributed to medical curriculum innovations. He developed the BS Human Biology with DLSU Manila, a pre-medicine course that allows qualified students to finish the course in two (2) years. He also pushed for the integration of computer-based learning materials in teaching histology and other medical subjects. This led to the offering of Health Informatics subject (a first among Philippine medical schools), establishment of the Department of Health Informatics, set up the Health Informatics Laboratory and the introduction of digital histology course (another first among Philippine medical schools).

As an active researcher, Dr. Gonzales has published numerous books, manuals, and journal articles, including a weekly newspaper column. He is the co-author of Esteban and Gonzales’ Textbook of Histology, which was used as a reference book of many educational institutions.

He held various administrative and management positions as an educator and administrator in DLSMHSI.

The conferment of the said award shall be held this August 2021 during the opening ceremonies of the College of Medicine for SY 2021-2022.

The Vice Chancellor for Academics, Deans, Directors, Chairs, and Heads of the Academics attended the Leadership Formation Program and Asean University Network-Quality Assurance General Orientation on July 23-24, 2019 at Hotel Kimberly, Tagaytay City.

The first day of the program was packed with three (3) sessions. Br. Michael J. Broughton FSC discussed the principles of a Lasallian leader. Vice Chancellor for Academics Juanito O. Cabanias presented the qualities of a Lasallian Academic administrator and their relevant work processes and procedures. Representatives from the different units and offices of the Hospital, Shared Services, Research, and Lasallian Mission, Linkages and Advancement were also invited to share their services, programs, and workflows involving the Academics.

On Day 2, the Academic Quality Management headed by its Director, Rowena M. Laigo, RN, LPT, MAEd, presented an overview of the Asean University Network-Quality Assurance (AUN-QA) and the direction of the Academics towards AUN-QA accreditation. AUN-QA Network is established as the ASEAN quality assurance network in higher education with the responsibility to promote quality assurance in higher education institutions, raise the standards of higher education and collaborate with both the regional and international bodies for the benefit of the ASEAN community. The AUN-QA Framework involves Programme Level Assessment and Institutional Level Assessment. DLSMHSI aims to become an AUN-QA Associate Member by this school year, start the preparation of its 5-year development plan and apply for AUN-QA Programme Level Assessment by the end of the 5th year or earlier.

Construction of the building is expected to commence this year and hopefully be ready for the August 2018 opening of classes.This is a milestone for the DLSHSI community and the College of Pharmacy as they strengthen their commitment to provide quality Lasallian pharmacy education for the future pharmacists of the country.
