THE HISTORY

De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute

HISTORY

De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute today is a premier higher education, healthcare, and research institution that forms future medical and health allied professionals who will have the commitment and dedication to become catalysts of the spiritual, social, and economic transformation of our country.  Its present stature reflects its equally noble roots.

  • 1977

The University Physicians’ Foundation Inc. was established with the purpose of founding a medical school in Dasmariñas, Cavite. This initiative aligned with the government's policy of decentralizing educational institutions away from the capital city and promoting the establishment of medical schools across different regions. The aim was to enhance the accessibility of quality healthcare services in various parts of the country.

  • 1979

Initially named Emilio Aguinaldo College of Medicine, the school commenced operations with the Jose P. Rizal National Medical Research Center serving as its inaugural teaching hospital.

  • 1982

The Foundation celebrated the inauguration of the University Medical Center (UMC), a four-story, 180-bed teaching hospital, marking a significant milestone in its commitment to providing quality healthcare and medical education.

  • 1992

The college underwent another name change, becoming known as the De La Salle University College of Medicine.

  • 1994

The establishment of the De La Salle University-Angelo King Medical Research Center (DLSU-AKMRC) marked a significant milestone in advancing medical research and innovation within the institution.

  • 1994

The management of the College of Physical Therapy, originally established in 1982 as part of DLSU-Aguinaldo (now DLSU-Dasmariñas or DLSU-D), was transferred to the De La Salle University College of Medicine.

  • 1995

Under the ownership and administration of the St. Br. Miguel Febres Cordero Medical Education Foundation, the complex comprising the College of Medicine, University Medical Center, College of Physical Therapy, and DLSU-AKMRC was officially named the De La Salle University-Health Sciences Campus (DLSU-HSC).

  • 1999

DLSUMC proudly achieved the distinction of becoming the first hospital in the Philippines to be awarded ISO 9001 (Quality Management System) Certification by TUV–Rheinland, underscoring its unwavering commitment to quality healthcare and service excellence.

  • 2000

Additional colleges were integrated into the administration of DLSU-HSC through the transfer of the Colleges of Medical Radiation Technology and Nursing and Midwifery from DLSU-D. Originally established in 1984 at DLSU-D, the College of Nursing and Midwifery underwent a renaming and is now referred to as the College of Nursing. Similarly, the College of Medical Radiation Technology, established in 1986, was also renamed and is now known as the College of Medical Imaging and Therapy.

  • 2007

The Institution's name was changed to De La Salle Health Sciences Institute (DLSHSI). This name change reflects the institution's renewed commitment to advancing its mission and making a difference as a leading health education, healthcare, and research institution in the country.

  • 2014

The Institution witnessed rapid growth in school population and academic advancement with the introduction of three new programs under three new colleges – Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy (Dr. Mariano Que College of Pharmacy), Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Science (College of Medical Laboratory Science), and the trimestral program, Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry (College of Allied Sciences).

  • 2015

DLSMHSI proudly launched its unique high school program, the Special Health Sciences Senior High School, which received approval from the Department of Education in August 2015 and was formally issued a Government Permit in October of the same year.

  • 2016

DLSUMC has expanded its reach and services with the establishment of a separate Medical Arts Center for its outpatients.

  • 2018

The Institution reached another significant milestone by adopting the new name – De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute (DLSMHSI). The incorporation of the term "Medical" reflects the Institution's visionary approach to introducing courses in Allied Health Sciences locally and globally, particularly in the field of Medicine, in alignment with the Lasallian brand of education. This embodies the core values of Spirit of Faith, Zeal for Service, Communion in Mission, and Reverence for Life.

  • 2022

The College of Dentistry, the newest addition to the academic services, launched its 6-year Doctor of Dental Medicine program.

THE LIFE OF

ST. JOHN BAPTIST

DE LA SALLE

Founder of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, Patron of Christian Teachers

  • Life of St. John the Baptist De La Salle

St. John Baptist de La Salle was born on April 30, 1651, in Rheims, France, the beginning of a life totally committed to Lasallian education and the Lasallian Mission. He, the son of affluent parents, was blessed to have an outstanding education and, after years of formation, became a Catholic priest.

He became engaged in education after promising a dying friend that he would help a group of Sisters working with orphan girls. Additional assistance provided to a friend who was building a school for financially challenged boys in Rheims made him realize his true vocation as an educator. After giving up his own fortune and social standing in 1684, he founded the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools (known today as De La Salle Brothers) with a group of teachers.

He revolutionized the field of education by forming a community of educators together with them he crafted a unique spirituality focused on teaching and learning. The primary Mission of the Institute is to provide human and Christian education to the youth, especially the poor. Excellence in learning, spiritual formation, inclusivity, individual respect, service, and social justice are all prioritized in the Lasallian educational system, which is centered on Lasallian values and personal relationships.

By the time he died in 1719, De La Salle had established schools in 22 cities and made substantial contributions to the area of education through his writings and creative approaches and techniques. The Roman Catholic Church proclaimed him a saint in 1900. Fifty years later, Pope Pius XII recognized him the Patron Saint of teachers.

Today, the dynamic Lasallian Community, which continues to carry on De La Salle's legacy and spirit, operates in 78 countries, including 1,118 educational institutions worldwide. The committed efforts of the De La Salle Brothers, numbering 1,543 in the Mission, are complemented by the collaboration of 104,614 Lasallian lay partners. Together, they provide support and guidance to a global community of 1,117,574 students and their families (as of 12/31/2022).

  • About the Logo

The five-pointed radiant STAR is the Signum Fidei star. It is a sign of faith and is the worldwide symbol of the De La Salle Brothers (Fraternum Scholarum Christianarum). It also means hope and it symbolizes the star of Bethlehem that led the wise men of the east to Jesus Christ, as De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute leads and guides people to the highest quality of life.

CADUCEUS is a winged staff with two snakes wrapped around it. It was the sign of a herald and hence a logical symbol for the messenger. Through it we proclaim our vision as a world class, God-centered health institution committed to achieving the highest quality of life and equity in health for our people. It was originally a herald’s staff, sometimes with wings, with two white ribbons attached. The ribbons eventually evolved into snakes in the figure-eight shape. In the 7th century, the caduceus became associated with medicine, based on the principles of using the planets and stars to heal the sick.

The LAUREL is honor and glory, excellence in healthcare services, health professions education, and health related research. It symbolizes forming Lasallian Achievers and Healers of God who are God-loving, person-oriented and patriotic health professionals imbued with the spirit of St. John Baptist De La Salle.

The FAN symbolizes technology and advancement, its movement can either be rotating or expanding. Moving forward to teach minds, touch hearts and transform lives using new technologies and researches in medicine and health.

FAITH, SERVICE AND COMMUNION are the core values of De La Salle. The Institution has a unique core value of REVERENCE FOR LIFE

The name DE LA SALLE MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES INSTITUTE serves as a border around the upper portion of the seal.

DASMARINAS, CAVITE, PHILIPPINES is carried at the bottom of the seal, with the laurel leaves on both ends

The founding year 1979 is in recognition of the alumni and employees in 1979 before DLSU administration.
