De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute (DLSMHSI) achieved major recognition at SDGs Connect 2026, held from October 14 to 16, 2026, at Universitas Airlangga in Surabaya, Indonesia. Hosted alongside the 11th ASEAN University Network – Health Promotion Network (AUN-HPN) Advisory Meeting, the international conference highlighted strategies for campus health promotion and healthy lifestyle behaviors.
Top Honors in Research
DLSMHSI Dr. Mariano Que College of Pharmacy students Althea Elaiza R. Ombion and Christian Niccolo F. Valencia secured 1st Place for Best Research Poster Presentation. Their award-winning study investigated the antibacterial activity of oregano (Origanum vulgare) leaf essential oil combined with cloxacillin against Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).

Overall, students from the College of Nursing and the Dr. Mariano Que College of Pharmacy presented eight research projects, comprising two oral presentations and six poster presentations. Their studies covered medication safety, disaster readiness, dementia prevention, Filipino Sign Language training, and campus environments. Additionally, faculty member Assoc. Prof. Marjorie Fay P. Sta. Maria and nursing student Althaea Timothy B. De Jesus delivered key oral presentations during plenary sessions.
Advancing the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
DLSMHSI’s participation directly advanced seven UN Sustainable Development Goals: SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and SDG 4 (Quality Education) through student and faculty research presentations; SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities) and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) via healthcare accessibility and pharmacy disaster readiness; SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 14 (Life Below Water) through delegate mangrove planting initiatives; and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) by engaging in regional academic collaborations across ASEAN.
Expanding Regional Partnerships
As an observer institution, DLSMHSI’s executive delegation met with regional university leaders to foster cross-border academic collaboration and student mobility across the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
Beyond academic sessions, delegates participated in mangrove planting—advancing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for climate action and marine conservation—while proudly representing Filipino identity through traditional Filipiniana and barong Tagalog attire. Through these efforts, DLSMHSI continues its Lasallian mission of
Nurturing Life through health promotion, research, and global partnership.
