Living the Mission: A DLSMHSI Alumnus Reflects on Purpose and Practice

By: Ma. Grace Siaton | Alumni Center for Engagement and Services

Behind every steady heartbeat of a child he treats is the quiet strength of a doctor shaped by compassion and purpose. Dr. Regente I. Lapak, a dedicated pediatric cardiologist and a proud alumnus of the De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute (DLSMHSI), brings more than just clinical expertise to his work, he brings empathy, humility, and a lifelong commitment to service.

Whether he’s in the clinic or mentoring young doctors, Dr. Lapak continues to live out the Lasallian values of faith, service, communion, and reverence for life. But who is the man behind the white coat? We sat down with Dr. Lapak to learn more about his journey.

The Calling to Heal

From an early age, Dr. Lapak felt a pull towards healing. "I was drawn to healing, not just the body, but the human spirit," he shares. "Pediatrics was a calling where I could bring hope and long-term impact." This deep-seated desire to make a difference in the lives of children and their families is the driving force behind his career.

Overcoming Challenges with Resilience

Dr. Lapak's journey hasn't been without its challenges. He candidly shares that balancing complex clinical work with teaching is no easy feat. "But challenges have taught me resilience, empathy, and the power of mentorship, especially during emotionally intense moments with young patients and their families," he says. These experiences have shaped him into a leader who understands the importance of emotional intelligence and strong support systems in the medical field.

Leading with Purpose

As the head of Continuing Professional Development, Dr. Lapak is a strong advocate for lifelong learning. "Quality care doesn’t rest on one physician. It’s built through systems, collaboration, and continuous improvement," he explains. He champions ethical practice, feedback, and evidence-based growth, ensuring that the next generation of doctors is equipped with the knowledge and skills to provide the best possible care.

Message for Future Doctors

To aspiring doctors, Dr. Lapak offers powerful advice. "In the era of Universal Health Care, we serve not just as clinicians but as advocates for equity. Know the system, challenge it when needed, and build communities of care." This message emphasizes the vital role of doctors as agents of social change, pushing for a more equitable and accessible healthcare system for all.

The Lasallian Identity: A Guiding Light

Dr. Lapak attributes much of his success and his unwavering values to his time at DLSMHSI. "My Lasallian identity grounds me," he says. "Reverence for Life, Faith, Service, and Communion in Mission are not just ideals; I live them. They define how I care, teach, and lead."

Dr. Lapak's story is a powerful reminder that the DLSMHSI legacy extends far beyond academics. It’s a lifelong mission of healing, service, and hope—a mission that Dr. Lapak embodies every single day.
