JBI’s First Intensive Workshop for DLSMHSI-UST Australia Awards Fellowship

As part of the Australia Awards Fellowship Round 19, the first three-day systematic reviews training conducted by Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) trainers was held from October 8 to 10, 2024, at Discovery Primea Hotel, Makati.

This one-year fellowship aims to leverage Australian education and training to enhance the use of research evidence in health policy and practice in the Philippines. It will address knowledge and skill gaps in developing, conducting, and reporting high-quality systematic reviews to inform clinical decision-making, guideline development, and health technology assessment for universal healthcare. Building on previous collaborations with the University of Adelaide, the fellowship will foster a network to promote evidence-based practice in the country.


A total of 13 fellows participated in the workshop, including three fellows from the Center for Health Research and Movement Science, University of Santo Tomas (UST), and ten fellows from De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute. The following are the fellows from the DLSMHSI:

On October 9, 2024, a guest lecture and networking reception was held with the theme “National Health Priorities and Universal Health Care: The Role of Evidence Syntheses,” attended by key stakeholders from government, academia, and professional organizations. Dr. Lester M. Tan of the Department of Health (DOH) discussed National Health Priorities, while Dr. Ruth Divine Agustin covered the role of Evidence Synthesis in Clinical Practice Guidelines. Dr. Celso P. Pagatpatan, Jr. and Ms. Bianca Pilla from JBI provided overviews of the Fellowship Program and preparations for the next workshop in Australia, where fellows will complete a systematic review for presentation in 2025.

Dr. Susan Olavidez, Vice Chancellor for Research, emphasized DLSMHSI’s commitment to becoming the preferred research institution in the region. This program underscores its dedication to advancing healthcare through research, international collaboration, and evidence-based practices—truly aligning with its mission of nurturing life through innovative and impactful research, practice, and education.

De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute (DLSMHSI) honors the life and legacy of Dr. Vivian Que-Azcona—a visionary leader, generous benefactor, and strong advocate of healthcare and education. Her contributions are deeply embedded in the Institution through the Dr. Mariano Que College of Pharmacy, named in honor of her late father. She also played a key role in establishing the Museum of the Human Body. Through the Mercury Drug Foundation, she empowered aspiring pharmacists by granting scholarships to Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy students at DLSMHSI, nurturing countless futures with compassion and hope. In 2020, DLSMHSI recognized her extraordinary impact by awarding her its first-ever honorary Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa). To commemorate the 40th day of her passing, DLSMHSI and the Dr. Mariano Que College of Pharmacy held a Memorial Mass on May 14, 2025. DMQCP Dean Mr. Louie Legaspi shared a heartfelt reflection, recalling “Time matters to Doc Vivian, and she always made time for what truly matters.” The ceremony concluded with a touching song tribute by DMQCP Student Council member, Harneen Solis, echoing the love and gratitude of the Lasallian community. Thank you, Ma’am Vivian, for a life dedicated to giving, serving, and inspiring.

Her visit marked a meaningful exchange of goodwill and shared aspirations. Her Highness graciously accepted a token of appreciation and letters of intent from DLSMHSI, symbolizing a commitment to fostering international collaboration in the fields of education, healthcare, and research. This engagement reflects the Institution’s dedication to cultivating global partnerships rooted in mutual respect, academic excellence, and compassionate service. On April 7, 2025, De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute (DLSMHSI) commemorated the 306th death anniversary of its Founder, St. John Baptist de La Salle, with a Healing Mass presided over by Rev. Fr. Jerry Orbos, SVD. Fr. Orbos delivered a deeply personal testimony about his battle with cancer, encouraging the community to trust in God, be kind, and choose inner joy as a powerful path to healing.

De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute (DLSMHSI), through its Environmental, Safety, and Occupational Health (ESOH) Department, conducted a three-day Basic First Aid, Emergency Rescue, and Transfer Training held on March 25, 26, and 27, 2025. The program culminated in a full-scale evacuation drill at the De La Salle University Medical Center (DLSUMC), where volunteers applied their newly acquired skills in a simulated emergency scenario. This initiative aims to strengthen emergency preparedness by equipping participants with life-saving techniques. DLSMHSI continues to promote a culture of safety, ensuring that its community is proactive, resilient, and ready to respond effectively to real-life emergencies.

DLSMHSI proudly emerged as a leader in educational innovation at EdTEk Con 2025 by securing the prestigious EdFolio Excellence Award , held on March 28, 2025, at the Waterfront Hotel Cebu. With the theme “Unfolding the Future of Education,” the national conference brought together leading minds in education technology to discuss advancements in education, cybersecurity, AI integration, and the evolving landscape of learning. Representing DLSMHSI were administrators from the Center for Continuing Education and Innovation (CCEI): Ma. Lovella M. Monderin-Aure (Director), Reynante B. Jacob, Jr. (Officer for Learning Objects Development and Training), and Gabriel Ian Guiao (Chair for Robotics). In its continued commitment to educational excellence, DLSMHSI, through the Center for Educational Effectiveness and Accreditation (CEEA), successfully conducted the Internal Assessment for Continuous Quality Improvement: A QAT Workshop on Tools and Techniques on March 12, 2025. This specialized training aimed to prepare the Quality Assurance Team (QAT) for the upcoming PAASCU and AUN-QA Accreditations. Equipping Internal Assessors for Excellence The workshop brought together QAT representatives from various departments, equipping them with essential competencies in conducting internal assessments. The training focused on the following key areas: Understanding the principles, scope, and purpose of internal assessment. Recognizing their roles and responsibilities as internal assessors. Applying effective assessment tools, evaluation techniques, and benchmarking methods. Identifying key areas for continuous quality improvement based on assessment findings. Formulating data-driven recommendations and providing constructive feedback. Hands-On Learning and Practical Application Beyond theory, participants engaged in informative and collaborative exercises, applying best practices in assessment, evaluation, and quality assurance—reinforcing their readiness for accreditation. Commitment to Continuous Quality Improvement The successful workshop underscores DLSMHSI’s unwavering commitment to upholding the highest standards in medical and health sciences education. By strengthening its QAT members, the Institution reaffirms its mission to deliver excellence in education, research, and healthcare service. On March 20, 2025, DLSMHSI became an official member of the Federation of School Sports Association of the Philippines (FESSAP), granting its student-athletes the opportunity to compete in national qualifying tournaments and pursue international sports participation. Through this affiliation, DLSMHSI gains access to inter-school competitions, providing student-athletes with opportunities to enhance their skills, gain experience, and represent the Institution on a broader stage. This membership reinforces the school’s commitment to both sports development and academic excellence, expanding its presence in collegiate athletics and offering athletes greater exposure to compete at national and international levels.
